Kaiguma Kōbō is my personal workshop dedicated to studying and practicing traditional Japanese carpentry methods. It's a space for learning the craft through hands-on work with time-tested joinery techniques refined over centuries.
海熊工房は、日本の伝統的な大工法を学び実践することに特化した私の個人工房です。何世紀にもわたって洗練されてきた継手技術を実践的な作業を通じて学ぶための空間です。
What Happens Hereここで行うこと
Various projects emerge from this workshop—large-scale construction like homes honoring post-and-beam traditions, and smaller functional pieces including furniture, sawhorses, and hand tools.
この工房からは様々なプロジェクトが生まれます—柱梁の伝統を尊重する家屋のような大規模な建設から、家具、鋸台、手工具などの小さな機能的な作品まで。
The Name名前について
Kaiguma combines the characters for “sea” (海) and “bear” (熊), read as kai + guma following on-yomi (Sino-Japanese readings) and rendaku (the voicing that turns kuma into guma when compounded).
海熊は「海」と「熊」の文字を組み合わせ、音読みと連濁（複合語で「くま」が「ぐま」に変わる現象）に従って「かい」＋「ぐま」と読みます。
“Kōbō” (工房) means “workshop” in Japanese, combining “工” (kō, craft/work) with “房” (bō, room/chamber). Together, they represent a dedicated space for skilled craftsmanship—where tradition meets innovation through the maker's hands.
「工房」（こうぼう）は日本語で「workshop」を意味し、「工」（こう、技や仕事）と「房」（ぼう、部屋や室）を組み合わせています。合わせて、熟練した職人技のための専用空間—作り手の手を通じて伝統と革新が出会う場所を表しています。
